Budget For Long Term & Short Term Travel

Ugandan Shillings (approx. 700 Euros)

Ugandan Shillings (approx. 700 Euros)

The most frequently asked question when we travel is “How much does / did it cost?

Here you find:

  1. A breakdown of expenditures for more than 25 countries, both on Short Term & Long Term Trips between 2007 and now,
  2. An in-depth analysis of our budget during our Round The World Trip in 2007 – 2008 and the main drivers of costs and the possibilities of cost reduction.

On our Round The World Trip, we spent in total 20.700 Euros per person for an entire year. That’s a lot more than most people spend. People we met usually had a budget between 12.000 to 15.000 Euros per person. Once we talked to a couple that lived on 10.000 Euros for 2 years, between the two of them! On the other hand we met people who burned 45.000 Euros per person in 15 months. Obviously the sky is the limit… Continue Reading →

Southwest Rajasthan – Budget

In the streets of Bundi, Rajasthan, India

Like on our first trip to Rajasthan in 2012, we opted against travelling low budget. Instead we chose “mid-range” hotels and restaurants. This trip could definitely be done a lot cheaper than spending 40 Euros per person per day (which does not include the international flight nor the visa fees), but allowed us to enjoy some incredible comfort. Witnessing one of the many processions (this time for peace in the world…) in Jaipur, the Pink City, Rajasthan, India

With only 12 days at hand, temperatures around 40 degrees and India being a rather cheap country, we opted against travelling low budget. Instead we frequented “mid-range” hotels and restaurants. This trip could definitely be done a lot cheaper than spending 44 Euros per person per day. This amount does not include the international flight or the visa fees. Continue Reading →

China – Budget

Leshan, the Biggest Bhudda, near Chengdu, China

China’s Southwest is unbelievably cheap to travel for western tourists: even though we significantly upgraded our standard of living and traveling, no longer really taking care of what we spent, we spent about 35 Euros a person per day. This could have been cut by at least one third, of course if we wanted to! Continue Reading →

Queenstown is only about “Adrenalone”, South Island, New Zealand

We spent almost 6 weeks in New Zealand, four on the South Island and a little less than two on the North Island. New Zealand is not a budget destination, nevertheless, we managed to spend 59 Euros per person per day, less than what we had budgeted. This is rather unexpected! How comes we did not spend much more? Continue Reading →

Hard Life …, Aitutaki Atoll, Cook Islands

Yes, we all know that the Pacific islands are extremely expensive, not talking about cost for getting there. But the Cook Islands are an interesting option for traveling in this region, not only because of their beauty but also for the fact that you can travel on a reasonable budget and still enjoy yourself! Easter Island – Budget & Summary

Moai, in Ahu Nau Nau, Rapa Nui or Easter Island, Pacific

This week on the Easter Island was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. We thought we would have lots of time to rest and do nothing spending a whole week on this island, but were very busy visiting the various events of the festival and the more famous sites of standing Moai. Besides, from midday to late afternoon, the sun is simply too strong for any major undertaking! Continue Reading →
