Three Days Of “Vacation” In Copacabana

We have been traveling for 11 weeks in South America so far. We visited 3 countries and spent one or more nights in 45 different places … Especially in Venezuela & Peru the rhythm of our travel was really challenging. So we needed a little rest and therefore chose to treat us to a few days of “vacation” in the famous Hostal La Cúpula in Copacabana, Bolivia, before continuing our trip.

This place is truly heavenly, located a five minutes walk from the center of the small city of Copacabana, on a hill overlooking Lake Titicaca. It features everything that a tired traveler dreams off: spacious and clean rooms, perfectly working hot showers, and above all heating. There is also a superb, inexpensive restaurant, a heated TV room where you can select a DVD every night from a fantastic collection, a kitchen to be used by the guests, hammocks and sun chairs. The owner, a Dutch man, is always looking after things and the well-being of his guests.

The only disadvantage is that at 3.890 meters above see level, the air is thin and you are very often breathless and the climate is extreme: a relentless, burning sun during the day and bitter cold nights. So even with heating, rooms are rather cold … Therefore we plan only to stay here for three days and will take another short “vacation”, probably in Sucre, which is much lower at “only” 2.790 meters above see level.

Our program in Copacabana: do nothing, do nothing and eventually … do nothing! And it feels good! Maybe write a little for our website and sort the last pictures, but nothing more!

We also met a German couple, Martin and Anke, who has been so far traveling for three (!!!) years on a boat. Dinners at the restaurant of La Cupola have been the perfect opportunity to exchange travel stories and tips over a bottle of wine and maybe one of their great Fondues.
