After 16 days in Chile we are back in Argentina, in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, as it likes to pride itself. Obviously it has marketed itself much better than Puerto Williams, in Chile, on the other side of the Beagle Channel. This is the TRUE southernmost settlement in the world, but not more than a couple of houses. Being almost at the 55th parallel south, it is further south than any other city on any other continent. So Ushuaia mercilessly sells its unique location claiming the title: “El ciudad en el fin del mundo”, attracting more and more tourists every year. So we considered it as the best place to meet Gilles’ family for Christmas!
The trip from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia turned into another traveler’s nightmare, a 15 hour bus ride gliding past flat, flat, flat Patagonian nothing scenery with an occasional sheep feeding on the monotonous vegetation.
The only suspense built up when we arrived at Punta Delgado, the narrowest point of Magellan Strait, to cross over. The sea was so rough and the wind so strong that the ferry could not dock! So the waiting began, in a bus being rocked by the storm. Nobody could give a prediction for when the wind was to calm down. So when we left after only waiting for three long hours in the middle of nowhere, we were quite happily surprised. We have heard of travelers who got stuck there for as long as 7 hours!
