The most unexpected is always the best… This can even prove true in a Tourist Ghetto like the Old City of Luang Prabang. No, Luang Prabang hasn’t changed since our last visit in 2008: it is a maze of Restaurants, Travel Agencies, Massage Parlors & Hotels.
As we were roaming around some back streets, we heard lots of Joyful screams and laughter coming from a crowd near a government building. We decided to barge in. There was a bit of negotiation with a young man at the entrance, with some communication difficulties.
A group of men, together with one charming, very elegantly dressed young lady, were playing the last round of championship of “Pétanque”. Of course the “Boules” they used all came from France, they finally explained! And they ware amazing players!
Very soon, we were offered a glass of Beer Lao. Well, we several times made the mistake to empty it, and could not protest fast enough… before our glasses were full again! We had to pretend to be tipsy to cut it to a farewell glass.
When the games were over, the winning team was awarded 300.000 Kip (approx. 30 €), given to the lady of the team.
