Leaving Mozambique and entering Malawi was quick and painless. Luckily, on the Malawian side, young men on motorbikes waited to take people across the 4 kilometer stretch between the two countries. We had not expected the borders to be so far apart and without them we would have had to walk the hilly road with our backpacks.
On the Malawian side we got a special treatment. The driver of a chapa invited us to sit next to him, something that we had never experienced before in Africa: it is always the driver’s friends or people of status who get these more comfortable seats. Despite the comfort and good spirit in the bus, it was painstakingly slow. So, what looked like a great start in Malawi turned a bit sour once we arrived in Blantyre: to cover the 280 kilometers from Tete in Mozambique, with the quick border crossing, took us more than7 hours.
